KLIA to Kuala Lumpur: train, Grab or private car?

By the Malaysia City Transfer team · Updated November 2026 · We run private transfers, so we also explain the options we don't sell.

QUICK ANSWER

There are three practical ways from KLIA (Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 / klia2) into Kuala Lumpur. The KLIA Ekspres train is fastest to KL Sentral (the operator lists 28 minutes from Terminal 1) and suits light luggage near a rail line. Grab is flexible but the price moves with demand. A pre-booked private car takes you door to door in about an hour, depending on traffic, for one price per car: RM200 (Toyota Innova, up to 6 people), RM250 (Hyundai Staria, up to 9) or RM250 (Toyota Alphard).

The three options side by side

Train running time is not your full door-to-door time. Road time changes a lot with traffic, especially at weekday rush hours and on public holidays.

How much does a private car from KLIA to KL cost?

With Malaysia City Transfer the price is for the whole car, not per person, and it already includes tolls and airport fees:

  • Toyota Innova — RM200 one way, RM380 return (up to 6 people)
  • Hyundai Staria — RM250 one way, RM480 return (up to 9 people)
  • Toyota Alphard — RM250 one way, RM480 return (up to 5 people, captain seats)

For a group of four or more, one car often costs less than four train tickets plus a taxi from KL Sentral to the hotel.

From the arrival hall to your car

  1. Check your terminal. KLIA Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 (klia2) are separate buildings with separate pickup points. Use the terminal on your flight booking.
  2. Give your flight number. We follow your real landing time, and the first 60 minutes of waiting after landing are free.
  3. Clear immigration and collect your bags. This can take 30–60 minutes or more at busy times, which is why the free waiting matters.
  4. Meet your driver. We send the driver's name and car plate on WhatsApp before you land. A name board at arrivals is available as an extra.
  5. Share the full address. Hotel name, condo tower and unit, or a map pin, avoids mix-ups between similar names.

Luggage, children and big groups

Luggage space depends on the size of your cases, not just how many there are. Tell us what you are bringing on WhatsApp and our team confirms the right car, 24 hours a day. Strollers, golf bags and wheelchairs are fine; just mention them first.

Child seats are RM20 each (up to two per car). Groups of more than 9 people can book two cars.

Going back to the airport

Work backwards from your airline's check-in time and allow extra time for traffic. From central Kuala Lumpur, most travellers leave 3–4 hours before an international flight. A return booking is two separate one-way trips; the car does not wait for you in between.

Common questions

How long does it take from KLIA to Kuala Lumpur by car?

About one hour to central Kuala Lumpur, depending on traffic and where you are going. Weekday rush hours and public holidays can add more time.

How much is a private car from KLIA to Kuala Lumpur?

With Malaysia City Transfer it is RM200 for a Toyota Innova, RM250 for a Hyundai Staria and RM250 for a Toyota Alphard, one way. The price is for the whole car and includes tolls and airport fees.

Is the train or a private car better from KLIA?

The KLIA Ekspres is fastest to KL Sentral and suits one or two people with light bags near a rail line. A private car is usually better for families, groups, heavy luggage, late-night arrivals or hotels away from the rail line, because it goes door to door for one price.

Do you pick up at klia2 (Terminal 2)?

Yes. Choose Terminal 2 (klia2) when you book. Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 have separate pickup points, so the terminal on your flight booking matters.

What if my flight is delayed?

Add your flight number and we follow your real landing time. The first 60 minutes after landing are free; after that waiting is charged by the hour, and we are flexible when the driver's schedule allows.
