How to get from Kuala Lumpur to Genting Highlands
By the Malaysia City Transfer team · Updated October 2026 · We run private cars, so we also explain the options we don't sell.
There are three main ways from Kuala Lumpur to Genting Highlands. The express bus leaves from KL Sentral or Gombak LRT station for Sky Sentral at mid-hill, where you change to the Awana SkyWay cable car; allow about 90 minutes in total. Grab goes straight up in about 60–75 minutes, depending on traffic. A private car takes about an hour door to door (weekends can add 30–45 minutes) and drops you at your hotel at the top with no cable car change, from RM320 for the whole car (Toyota Innova, up to 6 people).
The three options side by side
| Option | Time | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bus + cable car | About 90 minutes | Express bus from KL Sentral or Gombak to Sky Sentral (mid-hill), then the Awana SkyWay cable car (about 10 minutes) to SkyAvenue at the top. | One or two people with light bags on a budget. |
| Grab | About 60–75 minutes | Book in the app and go straight up; the price is set by the app. | Small groups with flexible plans. |
| Private car | About 1 hour (longer at weekends) | From your KL hotel or KLIA straight to your hotel door at the top, from RM320 per car, tolls included. | Families, groups, lots of luggage, or coming straight from the airport. |
How much is a private car from KL to Genting?
- Toyota Innova — RM320 one way, RM620 return (up to 6 people)
- Hyundai Staria — RM370 one way, RM720 return (up to 9 people)
- Toyota Alphard — RM370 one way, RM720 return (up to 5 people)
The price is for the whole car, not per person, and includes tolls. The same prices apply if you go straight up from KLIA.
What to know about the cable car
The Awana SkyWay runs about 2.8 km between Sky Sentral at mid-hill and SkyAvenue at the top, a ride of around 10 minutes. On weekends and public holidays the queue can be over an hour at peak times; before 9am or after 3pm is quieter. Changing from bus to cable car with big suitcases is hard work.
Weather and traffic
Genting sits at about 1,800 metres and is around 15–25°C all year, much cooler than KL, so bring a jacket for the evening. The road up gets busy at weekends and in school holidays, so an earlier start helps.
Coming back down and catching a flight
A return booking is two separate one-way trips; the car does not wait at the top. Going straight from Genting to KLIA for a flight? Allow plenty of time for traffic; for an international flight we suggest leaving about 4 hours before departure.
