How to get from Kuala Lumpur to Penang

By the Malaysia City Transfer team · Updated October 2026 · We run private cars, so we also explain the options we don't sell.

QUICK ANSWER

There are four ways from Kuala Lumpur to Penang. Flights take about 1 hour, plus airport time on both ends. The ETS train goes to Butterworth on the mainland in about 4 to 4.5 hours; from there a short ferry crosses to George Town. Express buses take about 5 hours or more to Butterworth or Sungai Nibong. A private car covers about 358 km in 4 to 4.5 hours over a Penang bridge, straight to your George Town or Batu Ferringhi hotel, from RM920 for the whole car (Toyota Innova, up to 6 people).

Butterworth is not George Town

Trains and many buses stop in Butterworth on the mainland. George Town, Batu Ferringhi and most hotels are on the island, so you still need the ferry, a Grab or a taxi across. With suitcases and children, this last part is the hardest.

Break the journey

The drive passes Ipoh and Kuala Kangsar, good places for a lunch stop. Ask our team to add a stop to your trip.

Weekends and festivals

Long weekends and festive seasons such as Chinese New Year and Hari Raya are very busy on the North–South Expressway and the bridges. Leave early and allow extra time.

Going back to KL or the airport

A return booking is two separate one-way trips. If you have a flight from KLIA, leave Penang at least 7 hours before departure, or consider flying from Penang Airport instead.
