How to get from Kuala Lumpur to Cameron Highlands
By the Malaysia City Transfer team · Updated October 2026 · We run private cars, so we also explain the options we don't sell.
There are three ways from Kuala Lumpur to Cameron Highlands. Express buses leave TBS for Tanah Rata several times a day and take about 4.5 to 5 hours. There is no train to the highlands: the ETS to Tapah Road takes about 2 hours, then you need a taxi to Tapah and a local bus up the hill (about 1 hour 40 minutes). A private car takes about 3.5 to 4 hours for roughly 210 km and goes straight to your hotel in Tanah Rata, Brinchang or Kea Farm, from RM680 for the whole car (Toyota Innova, up to 6 people).
The options side by side
| Option | Time | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Express bus | About 4.5–5 hours | From TBS to Tanah Rata Bus Terminal, several departures a day (Unititi Express, CS Travel and others), about RM45–55 one way. | Solo travellers and couples with light bags. |
| Train + local bus | About 4–4.5 hours with connections | ETS from KL Sentral to Tapah Road (about 2 hours), taxi to Tapah bus terminal, then the local bus to Tanah Rata (about 1 hour 40 minutes). | Rail fans with time to spare. |
| Private car | About 3.5–4 hours | From your KL hotel or KLIA straight to your highlands hotel, from RM680 per car, tolls included. | Families, groups, older travellers and anyone prone to car sickness who wants to stop on the way. |
The last hour is a winding mountain road
Whichever way you go, the climb from Tapah or Simpang Pulai is full of bends. If you get car sick, take something before the climb, sit in front and ask the driver for a short stop. In a private car you can stop whenever you need; on a bus you cannot.
Tanah Rata, Brinchang or Kea Farm?
Most buses stop in Tanah Rata. Many hotels, tea plantations and strawberry farms are further up in Brinchang and Kea Farm, so you may need another ride. Tell us your hotel name and we drop you at the door.
Weather and weekends
It is cool and often rainy, especially in the afternoon. Weekends and school holidays bring heavy traffic around Brinchang and the Kea Farm market, so leave early and expect slow traffic near the top.
Going back to KL or the airport
A return booking is two separate one-way trips; the car does not wait in the highlands. If you have a flight from KLIA, leave Cameron Highlands at least 6 hours before departure. For a day trip with the car waiting, ask our team for a day-hire price.
