How to get from Kuala Lumpur to Melaka
By the Malaysia City Transfer team · Updated October 2026 · We run private cars, so we also explain the options we don't sell.
There are three main ways from Kuala Lumpur to Melaka. The bus from TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) to Melaka Sentral takes about 2.5 hours, but Melaka Sentral is outside the old town, so allow around 4 hours door to door. There is no direct train: the ETS or Komuter goes to Pulau Sebang/Tampin, then it is another 45–60 minutes by road. A private car covers the roughly 145 km in about 2 hours, depending on traffic, from your KL hotel or KLIA straight to your Melaka hotel, from RM420 for the whole car (Toyota Innova, up to 6 people).
The three options side by side
| Option | Time | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bus | About 2.5 hours, about 4 hours door to door | From TBS roughly every 15–30 minutes to Melaka Sentral, then a local bus, taxi or Grab into the old town. | One or two people with light bags on a budget. |
| Train (ETS / Komuter) | Just under 2 hours to Pulau Sebang/Tampin, then 45–60 minutes by road | No train goes into Melaka; Pulau Sebang/Tampin is about 40 km from the centre. | Train fans with flexible plans. |
| Private car | About 2 hours (traffic dependent) | From your KL hotel or KLIA straight to your Melaka hotel door, from RM420 per car, tolls included. | Families, groups, lots of luggage, or coming straight from the airport. |

Melaka Sentral is not in the old town
The main bus station, Melaka Sentral, is a few kilometres north of the old town, so you need another ride to reach hotels around Jonker Street and the Red Square. With big suitcases or children, that last leg is the hard part; a private car drops you at the door.
Weekends and holidays
Melaka gets busy at weekends and in holiday seasons, and buses can fill up, so book ahead. By road, Friday evenings and the days before public holidays are busy heading south, so an earlier start helps.
Going back to KL or the airport
A return booking is two separate one-way trips; the car does not wait in Melaka. Going straight from Melaka to KLIA for an international flight? We suggest leaving about 4 hours before departure. For a day trip with the car waiting, ask our team for a day-hire price.
